The National Portrait Gallery holds a collection of over 160,000 photographs. At any one time only a small selection are exhibited within the Galleries. The bulk remain largely unseen, conserved in collection storage. Meanwhile the archive continues to grow with the gradual acquisition of significant works from the past as well as new work by contemporary photographers making the iconic images of our present age.

The aim of these web pages is to begin to open up the richness of the collection to students of photography, to encourage a better understanding of the photographic past and to inspire work for the future.
