English for Speakers of Other Languages

ESOL visits by colleges and community organisations to the National Portrait Gallery are free.

Designed for students in adult ESOL classes, the Gallery’s programme promotes the development of literacy skills through engagement with works of art in the Gallery’s Collection. Visits last 90 minutes and involve a tour led by an experienced tutor. All materials are mapped to the ESOL Skills for Life curriculum.

Teacher's notes have been developed to help prepare tutors and students for their visit to the Gallery. There are language based worksheets at two levels and suggestions for pre-visit activities.
