Group Leaders' Training
Professional Development Workshops
The National Portrait Gallery has created a programme of FREE professional development training sessions for staff, care workers, managers of community organisations, health, housing and supported living programmes. To date over 500 group leaders have participated in the Gallery’s Group Leaders’ training programme.
These practical sessions led by experienced artist- educators enable participants to develop their skills, explore how to use the Gallery as a resource, and investigate ideas and activities to use with their clients during a Gallery visit. The sessions take place on a Thursday evening from 18.00 – 20:00

Group leaders training at the Gallery
Thematic programmes allow in-depth discussion of various works, artists and media within a theme, such as ‘What’s in a Portrait?’ or ‘3D Objects’. The thematic approach exposes participants to key methods, materials, ideas, and concepts related to modern and contemporary art.
Focus on the Medium
Explore a particular medium (e.g. drawing, painting, photography or sculpture) in the Gallery’s Collection. You might choose to discuss works in the Gallery’s Primary, Photograph or Archive Collections.
