Vulnerable Children and Young People

The National Portrait Gallery has worked with organisations such as Barnardo’s, Action for Children, Chance UK and Save the Children to develop practical art activities and projects for underprivileged and vulnerable children, young people, carers and support staff. Practical art and photography workshops are available during the UK academic year and school holidays.

Case Study
Fashion and Photography Project
This project explores the theme of fashion, using the Gallery’s extensive photography collection. Through lively discussions and practical work at the Gallery, participants develop their own fantastic designs and photographs.

Each year participants work with photographers and artists to explore photography and fashion. Groups learn how the iconography of style and fashion can be used in portraits, and draw on this understanding as a stimulus for their own creative work. Participants are responsible for designing garments, photographing their work, and writing captions explaining how particular portraits may have inspired their designs.
