The Primary and Archive collections are rich in satirical works and caricatures. The Regency period is represented by a particularly fine collection of hand-coloured etchings by James Gillray and works by caricaturists including James Sayers and the Dighton family. The Nineteenth century collection includes sketches by Sir Edwin Landseer and original caricatures made for the magazine Vanity Fair. Notable twentieth century cartoonists and illustrators in the collection include Sir Max Beerbohm, Anthony Wysard, Robert Sherriffs and Sir Bernard Patridge. The later years of the century are represented in the Primary collection by the works of Mark Boxer and Sir Gerald Scarfe.
