Portraits on display
The drawing room in the nineteenth-century
was a decidedly female room - a place to receive callers, take
tea, make music or, without the men of course, to retire to after
dinner. This room has a late Regency character, the decoration
taking its cue from the group portrait dated c.1830 of
the composer and founder of the music publishing firm, Vincent Novello, seated at the piano surrounded
by his large family. The architraves to the doors - debased versions
of Sir John Soane's style - provided a pattern for the cornice
and fireplace while the yellow fabric used on the walls was rewoven
from a sample dating from the 1840s. The Empire style carpet
was taken from a design of 1798. The furniture includes balloon
back chairs, originally from the Castle, and a 'Biedermeier'
sofa probably made in Berlin around 1830.
