Special website feature

The Gallery's Archive houses a rich collection of portrait prints which are rarely exhibited. Sadly, a number of these have fallen into disrepair, because in the past they were often viewed as reference tools rather than works of art. The National Portrait Gallery has an ongoing commitment to rescue these prints from deterioration. This exhibition goes behind the scenes at the Gallery in charting the recent conservation of a group of large and important Georgian engravings. It shows how these previously foxed, torn and tattered prints have regained much of their original vitality. It also offers visitors advice on caring for their own prints and collections.

The exhibition has been curated by the Heinz Archive and Library which is open to the public by appointment.
