'In 1962 I had just returned from living in Greece and needed some work, so I tried my hand as a "paparazzo". At the time I was living at 49, Elgin Crescent in Notting Hill and met the would-be writer Derek Marlowe (later famous for Dandy in Aspic) also struggling to survive. In our frequent visits to our local pub, Henneky's in Westbourne Grove, we spotted at a corner table, a young blonde actress who had at that time had only done a number of minor films.
We approached her about doing an interview and photo shoot for a small arts magazine called Scene. Her name was Julie Christie. Here are the results of one of the films I shot in her Earl's Court bedsit which include the image now on display at the National Portrait Gallery. Derek received £12 for the interview and I collected £8 for my accompanying photographs.' |
