'A Specious Orator', James Christie (1730-1803), published 1794

Auctioneer and founder of Christie's, the auction house. Popular with his contemporaries, his acquaintances included notables such as David Garrick, Sir Joshua Reynolds and Thomas Gainsborough. Christie was noted for his tall, dignified demeanour and eloquence.

At the time this etching was published Christie's was located at 125 Pall Mall, next door to Schomberg house where Gainsborough lived.

This image is the basis for the Christie's logo design.
