'The Master General of the Ordinance', Arthur Wellesley,
1st Duke of Wellington
(1769-1852), published 1819

Soldier and statesman; created Duke of Wellington, 1814; victor of Waterloo, 1815; Prime Minister, 1828-30 and 1834.

After the withdrawal of the Allied army from France in 1818, Wellington returned to England. On 26 December he was appointed Master General of the Ordnance, a position which carried a seat in Lord Liverpool's Tory cabinet. He is depicted wearing the Waterloo medal and the Star of the Order of the Bath.
