The National Portrait Gallery
pioneered the display of contemporary portrait photographs in
an art gallery setting as long ago as 1968 through a major Cecil
Beaton exhibition. However it is only in recent years that contemporary
photographic portraits, meaning those created since 1990, have
been integrated in to the permanent displays on the Ground Floor.
The speed of commissioning, creating
or acquiring photographic portraits as compared to painted or
sculpted portraits allows the Gallery to display a significant
number of up-to-the-minute subjects in relatively quick succession.
A positive result of the accessibility and immediate nature of
the photographic portrait is that the Gallery can now share with
its visitors a wider spectrum than ever before of those people
who are making important contributions to Britain today.
Deloitte is the Gallery's Contemporary Photography Displays Partner.
This partnership aims to highlight the Gallery's contemporary
photographic collection through a series of special initiatives.
The Deloitte Commission, as part of the National Portrait
Gallery Photographic Portrait Prize, is for the best portrait
taken by a photographer aged 25 or under. The Deloitte Acquisition
Fund enables the Gallery to purchase and commission photographic
portraits of figures from business and public life. Deloitte
will also be helping the Gallery to develop its UK touring programme
of contemporary photography from the collection.
The latest display made possible
by The Deloitte Acquisition Fund is A
Picture of Health: Portraits by Julia Fullerton-Batten.
