ASSEMBLING THE FAMILY / THE ELECTRONIC FAMILY ALBUM

One of more ambitious projects in recent years was the production of interactive electronic family album. A group of sixteen young people worked through a series of ten workshops, organised over a three month period. Participants were encouraged to collect and research their own family albums. They then reworked and montaged the material into a series of family narratives using conventional montage, photography, video and the application of computer imaging software ( photoshop, quick time VR and Director). The project was run in partnership with Artec, the Islington electronic arts training centre. The finished work was installed at the NPG as part of the exhibition, 'Assembling the Family' ,an exploration of the history and technology of family photograph albums.

The project was generously supported by Marks & Spencer.

Since its first showing at the NPG the work has been invited for exhibtion at the International Symposium of Elecrtonic Art to be held in Chicago, USA in September 1997.
