SIR FRANCIS DRAKE
7 - 9 April and 5 September
1997
Led by 'egg tempera' artist Anne
Everett, the course was inspired by the full length 'table' (i.e.
painted on a wooden panel) portrait of Drake, and directed at
confident amateur artists who are familiar with the egg tempera
technique and who are interested in portrait painting.
During the first morning participants
made egg tempera sketches based on short poses and still life
groupings which included drapery and a globe. In the afternoon
they started on the final long pose by the model in costume standing
on a chequered floor. Day two and three were spent working on
this, building up layers of paint onto the heavy boards provided.
In September, students returned
with their now fully dry and completed work for a varnishing
session. At this stage there was also a tutorial and discussion
about the work produced.
