LAND OF THE GIANTS
7 - 10 October 1996

Christopher Stevens, winner of the BP Travel Award 1995, exhibited the results of his two month trip to India in a display entitled 'Land of the Giants'. His travels focused on the cinema industry and particularly the large publicity billboards erected to advertise films. Stevens became increasingly concerned with the painting of paintings as flat objects, their relative scale, the reproduced image and issues of cropping and distortion.

In the morning Stevens explained and discussed his painting methods and made connections between his work and that of other contemporary artists on display. He also showed a wonderful set of slides taken on his travels.

During the afternoon, students worked in the studio, some from their own source material, making paintings inspired by the themes discussed in the morning.
