Inner Picture marks the beginning
of Reaching Out, Drawing In, a new community education programme
at the National Portrait Gallery.
Young people from Richmond-upon-Thames
PAYP (Positive Activities for Young People) holiday scheme and
Hounslow Pupil Referral Service worked with artists Madeleine
Conn and William Bishop-Stephens. The young people produced their
own artwork, interpreting portraits from the National Portrait
Gallery's collections.
The young people at the Pupil
Referral Service created installations in collaboration with
Madeleine, exploring the character of their chosen portrait from
the Gallery's collection. William worked with a group of young
people, who selected portraits for an animation looking at what
happens in the Gallery after it closes for the night. The group
provided the voices and storylines for the final piece.
The work of the young people
and a selection of the portraits that inspired them are displayed
side by side in this exhibition, offering an alternative view
of the Gallery's collections.
