Introduction
The National Portrait Gallery
(NPG) has a tradition of exciting and innovative work with primary
school groups. As in the past, we will continue to respond to
the individual needs of particular classes and we will provide
a tailor-made session relating to the permanent collection at
the request of a teacher. However, as most visits are dictated
by the requirements of the National Curriculum, we have outlined
below our most popular sessions including some which complement
the National Literacy Strategy. We have online mathematical investigations
from portraits which support the National Numeracy Strategy.
We hope this information will assist teachers to plan trips for
their classes, and may be of use in communicating to parents
and school governors the educational purpose of the visit.
All materials are provided by
the Education Department. Sessions are free and are taught by
the Education Officer or by experienced freelance staff. We recommend
a pre-visit to see the galleries you will be using.
The Department for Culture, Media
and Sport (DCMS) are now requiring us to supply more details
about the school groups who visit the NPG. We will therefore
need to ask more questions than usual about your school. We would
be grateful for your co-operation to safeguard our future education
funding.
Data Protection Act 1998: The
National Portrait Gallery may take photographs of participants
as part of standard gallery sessions. All images will be held
securely by the Education Department. In some cases, these images
may be used to publicise the Gallery's services (on the website;
promotional leaflets; displays etc.). Under the terms of the
Data Protection Act, 1998 you have the right to object to the
use of your image for the above purpose. If further information
is needed please telephone the Education Department on 020 7312
2483 (BT's Type Talk: 18001).
