Literacy at Key Stage 2
The NPG is offering two sessions which complement the National Literacy Strategy in the areas of biography, and of poetry and prose by eminent authors. These 11/2 hour sessions include discussions of portraits and drawing, as well as literacy work.
The biography sessions consist of stories of people's lives chosen from one of the following periods: Elizabethan, Eighteenth Century, Regency and Victorian.
The session on authors features writers from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, using a big book of their poems. Authors include Tennyson, Elizabeth Barrett and Robert Browning, Robert Louis Stevenson, Kipling, Hardy and T.S. Eliot.
  Science at Key Stage 2
Fabrics
Looks at natural fabrics - wool, silk, linen etc. - how the different textures are represented in portraits.
Making Colour
How oil paint was made; matching shades and close observational artwork.
  Maths
Although no specific taught sessions are on offer, Mathematical Investigations for Years 5 and 6 are available as e-learning resources.
  Music and Dance
We are keen to encourage creative interpretation of the portraits in different media and would be interested to hear from teachers who want to pursue this approach. We have links with Children's Music Workshop who regularly use a visit to the National Portrait Gallery as the starting point for class compositions; the children later return to perform their completed music in front of the picture which stimulated its composition.
For further details please telephone 020 7866 8144 (BT's Type Talk: 18001).
Dance is also included in our Henry Unton workshop.
