Reaching Out, Drawing In is a
key part of the National Portrait Gallery's educational and outreach
work over a three-year period. Through a series of exhibitions
and accompanying programmes, the project will seek to enhance
the education and learning potential of the National Portrait
Gallery.
The project will enable the National
Portrait Gallery to undertake a sustained programme of new audience
development and will seek to give wider access to the Gallery's
collections through innovative and engaging interpretation. In
particular the project aims to engage non-user groups including
disabled people, young adults and minority ethnic groups.
Using a series of six exhibitions
in the Studio Gallery as a focus for working with new audiences
each exhibition will be marked by a high degree of collaboration.
Each of the six displays will arise directly out of the work
with identified groups and audiences and will be accompanied
by related activities and workshops. Participants will be consulted
with regards to how their work is displayed and the methods of
interpretation used in each exhibition.
The exhibitions will provide
an essential vehicle for undertaking work with these audiences,
meeting their specific needs, while at the same time focusing
on the collections. The displays will also be accessible and
promoted to the Gallery's more traditional audiences. There will
be activity and learning programmes linked to each of the displays,
as well as resources available on-line via the Gallery's website.
