FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
VALUATIONS?
The National Portrait Gallery is not able to give valuations.
One of the reputable auction-houses (Christie's, Sotheby's, Bonhams
or Philips, for example) may be able to help.
NON-PORTRAIT WORKS?
The National Portrait Gallery specialises in British portraiture.
If your research enquiry falls outside our area of expertise,
we cannot help - but perhaps some of our colleagues can. You
might want to look at
www.nationalgallery.org.uk
www.vam.ac.uk

or go to our links page for other useful
resources.
HELP WITH RESEARCH?
We do not have the resources to do justice to all portrait research
enquiries (particularly if they are lengthy or complex) - but
we can help you to help yourself:
- The website is illustrated with
many works from the collection and the search facility is an
excellent starting-point.
- The IT Gallery is available
to visitors during normal Gallery opening hours.
- The Public Study Room of the
Heinz Archive & Library is available for serious research.
For more information go to our Archive
& Library page.
- The Gallery also publishes a
range of works about the collection, which you may find in your
local reference library. If you would like to purchase your own
copy, they may be ordered from our bookshop shop@npg.org.uk.
Once you have identified the works in the collection which you
wish to receive as prints or license for publishing purposes,
please contact picturelibrary@npg.org.uk
to make the necessary arrangements and we will be happy to help
you.
If you are conducting research
on a particular portrait and would like our assistance and advice,
please go to our Archive & Library
page for more information about how to contact us.
