Investigating Drawing

Richard Parkes Bonington
by Margaret Sarah Carpenter,
circa 1827
chalk

Chalk

Carpenter uses an intense black chalk
in addition to lightly smudged charcoal
to make precise marks around the eye and nose.
Red chalk in the corner of the eyes and mouth
provides the only colour.
