Falling between dance and the visual arts, Paper Portraits explores dance's relationship to artists' materials: how movement influences art, the choreography of construction and how line, colour and sculptural form can bear its mark on movement and space. Performed within the galleries, five dancers will create life-sized self-portraits influenced by the sitters in the Collection.

Black and White in Colour Parts One and Two

A two-part documentary charting the presence of black people in British cinema and TV from the late 1800s to the early 1980s.

This film has been cancelled due to distribution problems. Instead of the screening Tony Warner of 100 Black Men of London will be giving a presentation charting the history of Black actors in British film and television.

Vorticism vs Bloomsbury Study Day

Wyndham Lewis, through Vorticism, and the Bloomsbury circle shared a common determination to pioneer a British response to Modernism. They worked and exhibited together in close collaboration until their differences were very publicly aired in a row over the Ideal Home Exhibition in 1914. Richard Cork, Frances Spalding and Richard Humphreys are among the leading critics, curators and art historians who will explore the conflicts and allegiances that sparked the rift and its consequences.

Using the Wyndham Lewis Portraits exhibition as inspiration, participants will develop drawings and paintings using the visual language of Vorticism, Cubism and Futurism. No previous experience necessary and all materials are provided.

The day begins with a lecture tracing the stories of Hampstead's most famous residents including John Constable, John Keats and Lucian Freud and is followed by a guided walk through some of London's most beautiful eighteenth-century streets, led by historian and Blue Badge Guide Owen Joseph. Travel to Hampstead not included although the group will be accompanied on the London Underground by the guide.
