Michelle Sank for Janine (from a series, commissioned for the exhibition Reality Crossings, Germany) Michelle Sank was born in Capetown, South Africa in 1953 and is now based in England. She received a BA in Fine Art in South Africa, and a Masters degree in Photography from De Montfort University, Leicester. Her work has been included in several group exhibitions across the world, including the John Kobal Portrait Prize in 2001, and she has recently had solo exhibitions in Belfast, Liverpool, London, Mexico and the USA. Lucila, a.m.

Julieta Sans for Lucila a.m. Julieta Sans was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina in 1979. She studied English Literature at the University of Buenos Aires and Photography at the EFC, Buenos Aires before moving to London, where she qualified with a Postgraduate Certificate in Photography from Central St Martins. She works in London, as a creative researcher in advertising, and also freelances on photography projects. Her work was recently featured in the group exhibition, Amour Expo, Cabourg, Normandy, 2007, which she also co-curated, and in the group exhibition Day Four's Winter Notes on Summer Expressions in 2006, also published as a book. Included in the Photographic Portrait Prize exhibition for the first time, her shortlisted portrait is of her friend, Lucila, photographed in Lucila's old bedroom at her father's flat in Buenos Aires.

David Stewart for Alice & Fish (from the series Relations) David Stewart was born in Lancaster in 1958 and has been based in London for over 25 years. He studied photography at Blackpool College (1979-1981) and worked as assistant to a number of photographers in London before setting up his own business as a commercial photographer. Initially focussing on still life, David has specialised in portraiture for several years, and has published one book of his work to date ­ Fogeys, which also toured as a solo exhibition. His work has been included in previous Photographic Portrait Prize exhibitions - his portrait 'Mister Valentine' (of his father), also from the series Relations, was included in last year's exhibition. Shortlisted for the first time this year, David's portrait is of his teenage daughter Alice photographed in October 2006 'in her "emo" phase' at Grange-over-Sands in Cumbria.

Jonathan Torgovnik for Joseline Ingabire with her daughter Leah Batamuliza, Rwanda (from the series Intended Consequences) Born in Tel Aviv in 1969, Jonathan Torgovnik began his career as a combat photographer in the Israeli army. He moved to New York in his early twenties and graduated with a BFA degree from the School of Visual Arts. His photographs have appeared in publications including Newsweek, Sunday Times Magazine, and Paris Match and displayed in numerous solo and group exhibitions in the US and Europe as well as being featured in the permanent collections of museums such as The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, and the Bibliotheque National De France in Paris. His shortlisted portrait is from the series Intended Consequences: mothers of genocide, children of rape, documenting the lives of Tutsi women who had been the victims of sexual violence during the 1994 genocide in Rwanda.
