DANIEL RADCLIFFE DRAWING ACQUIRED BY NATIONAL PORTRAIT GALLERY

16-year-old
Harry Potter star becomes one of the youngest to enter the Collection of the National Portrait Gallery as his new portrait drawing, by Stuart Pearson Wright, is unveiled

Actor Daniel Radcliffe will be among the youngest to join the National Portrait Gallery's Collection when his portrait drawing by BP Award winner Stuart Pearson Wright is acquired by the Gallery following its unveiling at the National Theatre tomorrow (Wed 12 April). The pencil drawing of Daniel acquired alongside nine other actor portraits by the artist whose three-dimensional study of J K Rowling unveiled at the Gallery last year has already become a huge favourite with visitors. The actor portraits form part of a simultaneous exhibition of over 40 new drawings opening tomorrow at the National Theatre and at the National Portrait Gallery.

Daniel is shown sitting in an armchair in the artist's studio looking relaxed and informally dressed but with an alert and penetrating expression. "Most People are Other People:" Portraits of Actors from Britain and Ireland by Stuart Pearson Wright brings together actors from film, theatre and television. The drawings give us a rare insight into the private moments behind the public image, raising questions of self, reality, and the performance of the everyday. The Gallery acquisitions on show at the National Theatre are Stuart's new portraits of Bend it Like Beckham's Parminder Nagra and rising British film star Natalie Press. Stuart's drawings of Nonso Anozie, Jeremy Irons, Jonny Lee Miller, Geoffrey Palmer, Alan Rickman, Timothy Spall and Alison Steadman are the acquisitions now showing at the National Portrait Gallery.

Daniel Radcliffe is best known for his role as Harry Potter. Playing the role has won him worldwide acclaim and a number of awards. He first appeared on British television in December 1999 when he played the title role in the BBC's David Copperfield. Prior to filming the first Harry Potter feature he made his debut in John Boorman's The Tailor of Panama. He has just completed filming in December Boys and is now shooting the fifth Potter film Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. Daniel is shortly to appear in Ricky Gervais's acclaimed BBC comedy Extras. With the exception of members of the Royal Family and group portraits with babies mostly in photographs, the 16-year-old actor becomes one of the youngest sitters for an individual portrait in the National Portrait Gallery.

Stuart Pearson Wright was the winner of the BP Portrait Award 2001 for Gallus Gallus With Still Life and Presidents. In 2003 he painted the controversial naked-from-the-waist-up portrait of Prince Philip and in 2005 the Portrait Gallery displayed the hugely popular commission of J K Rowling, author of the Harry Potter series. He has won numerous other awards and has exhibited nationally.

Daniel Radcliffe says: "I am absolutely delighted to have been chosen to be included in Stuart Pearson Wright's exhibition and to be part of such an esteemed group of people. I've never sat for a portrait and found the whole experience fascinating. And I love the finished result".

Sandy Nairne, Director of the National Portrait Gallery, says: "Stuart Pearson Wright's drawings are wonderfully wrought studies in figure and character - the Gallery is very pleased to have been able to acquire a fascinating group of subjects."

"Most People are Other People": Portraits of Actors from Britain and Ireland by Stuart Pearson Wright is at the National Portrait Gallery until June 11 and at the National Theatre (April 12-May 20). It tours to the Hunt Museum, Limerick (Jan 9- Feb 9, 2007) and the University of Wales, Aberystwyth (Feb 12-Mar 23, 2007.)
