2002 is the bi-centenary of the death of George Romney, one of
eighteenth-century Britain's greatest portrait painters. Best
known for his society portraits including his famous studies
of Emma Hamilton, mistress of Admiral Lord Nelson, this is the
first comprehensive exhibition of Romney's work. Aiming to end
two centuries of neglect and misrepresentation, it reveals Romney
as an innovative artist who experimented and developed new styles
throughout his career.
