The Romney Society was formed
in Kendal, the site of his first studio, in 1993. The primary
purpose of the Society is to explore the art of the eighteenth
century with particular reference to the life and work of George
Romney 1734-1802 and his contemporaries.
The activities of the Society
include:
- Lectures and meetings, together
with visits to selected galleries and historic houses.
- Publications. The Society issues
annual Transactions (see Publications List) which contain original
papers and transcripts of the lectures to the Society. Additionally
a Newsletter is produced three times a year. The Society has
also published a worldwide list of Romney's 'Paintings in Public
