The Romney Society was formed in Kendal, the site of his first studio, in 1993. The primary purpose of the Society is to explore the art of the eighteenth century with particular reference to the life and work of George Romney 1734-1802 and his contemporaries.

The activities of the Society include:

• Lectures and meetings, together with visits to selected galleries and historic houses.
• Publications. The Society issues annual Transactions (see Publications List) which contain original papers and transcripts of the lectures to the Society. Additionally a Newsletter is produced three times a year. The Society has also published a worldwide list of Romney's 'Paintings in Public Collections'. For further descriptions of these please see the Publications List.
• Offering a Bursary to encourage students in the study of Romney and his contemporaries.

• Jan 7 : Society dinner at The Blue Bell, Heversham
• Feb 14: social evening at the home of Dr and Mrs Tower (theme to be 4 short discussions led by members on 18th century art topics they have studied. )
• Feb 26: lecture on three women portraitists in 18th century

• September 30 (one night): trip to London to Foundling Museum,Dulwich Picture Gallery and Romney Memorial lecture by Alex Kidson at the Paul Mellon Centre
• October 21: lecture on Lancashire painters and the Liverpool Academy in time of Romney
