Letter from Watts to Lionel Cust, the director of the National Portrait Gallery, dated 28 December 1895, speaking of his 'Hall of Fame' portraits as his 'contribution to the National History'
 Letter

Limnerslease,
Guildford
Dec 28 1895

Dear Mr Cust,
Thank you for your gratifying letter, I am very glad to hear that my contributions to the national history met with favour from the Trustees, I hope it is understood tht my presentations alike of the portraits and the series of large pictures having an ethical significance (which I think is a new departure whether worth any thing or not) are placed at the disposition of duly constituted authorities absolutely unconditionally, so that you will do what seems best about the frames or any thing else. If you do change the frames of any I shall like to have the unappropriated frames
