Selected Letters Letter from William Ewart Gladstone to G.F. Watts, dated 21 February 1894, describing his impressions of the artist's portrait of Sir Andrew Clark.

10, Downing Street,
Whitehall.
Feb. 21. 94

Dear Mr Watts
I thank you very much for giving us an opportunity of seeing your picture of Sir A. Clark. His memory is dear to us, and we should have regretted any memorial of him less than worthy. Such a failure was effectually

provided against when you accepted the Commission. But I don't think a merely negative acknowledgement quite meets the case. Speaking of my own impressions only, I find the picture delightful to see both as a most refined & beautiful work of art and as a living recollection of the person represented.
  Believe me,
Sincerely yours
WE Gladstone
