Selected Letters Letter from William Ewart Gladstone to G.F. Watts, dated 26 June 1894, offering the artist a baronetcy.

Biarritz
(address to D. St)
June. 26. 94.

Dear Mr Watts
I indulge today in what is to me a very great pleasure. It is the pleasure of writing (with Her Majesty's sanction) to say that the offer of a Baronetcy, which you long ago de-

clined, is now renewed through the medium of this note.

You had than ever accept titles to the honour that titles has since been amplified, and further deserved by well known causes.

I currently hope that you may be inclined to accept it and I hold this

hope in the interest of British art, which must always receive some beautiful impulse when public honour is awarded in quarters the best entitled to it.

Pray make my best compliments to Mrs Watts, and believe me
Most faithfully yours
WE Gladstone
