Letter from artist to Sir G. Scharf, the director of the National Portrait Gallery, dated 16 December 1871, giving an account of his life.
  cadet to Woolwich, & was intended for a Public Office. A friend however introduced me to the present President of the Royal Academy, & I painted for a short time in his studio - subsequently I became the pupil of Sir M.A. Shee. I was a student of the Royal Academy. On my return from Italy, I exhibited in 1849 the portraits of the eminent sculptor Wyatt & Leigh Murray, the actor, and since that time
