Selected Letters Letter from George Robinson Ripon, 1st Marquess of Ripon to G.F. Watts, dated 28 June 1902, expressing pleasure that the artist has been awarded the Order of Merit.

Studley Royal
Ripon
28. June 1902

My dear Watts,
It is a good augury of the success of the new Order of Merit that it should start with you as one of its first members. It is a proof of the King's good judgement that he should have chosen you as the special representation of English Art. You need no more honours, for your works are your true distinction; but

yet it must be a sincere pleasure to all your friends to see your "merits" thus recognised and to no one more truly than to

Yours most sincerely
Ripon
