parts were bulging about
an inch deep. So that when the portrait was flattened by relining,
things became crooked especially the eye and outline of the cheek.
So you can imagine the difficulty I had in getting things right.
I wanted Sargent to have a go at it himself after I had done
my best. But he wouldn't touch it. And you have it now as it
came out of my studio.
Talking of Sargent, I have
been kept pretty busy of late tickling up his work for the coming
R.A. show, & my studio is full up with his paintings at the
present moment.
Yours very truly
George C. Rollin
