Letter
from David Thurlow Cunninghame to Sir G. Scharf, director of
the National Portrait Gallery, dated 10 September 1867, offering
to sell the portrait of Baron Thurlow to the Gallery and providing
information about it. |

"a
first rate painting".
Many years ago George the 4th then Prince Regent wished to buy
it & offered my father 500 guineas for it. It is a family
portrait & they refused to part with it. Circumstances however
now prompt me to sell it. The one other Portrait of him which
I saw years ago in Windsor Castle was at the Manchester Exposition
in 57. But my picture is very superior to it. |
