Undated note written by Benjamin West giving instructions on how to achieve a storm effect in a landscape painting.
 Note

Storm!

To produce this effect you proceed as before except to lay it flat over the mountains, repeat this gradation if you want it a stronger sky, lay in the distant mountains of the middle tint of the sky perhaps a little cooler, you must always remember to keep up the harmony between the warm sky and the landscape, throughout your drawing keeping it next to white paper in the foreground.
