from restorer to Sir G. Scharf, director of the National Portrait
Gallery, dated 12 July 1893, stating that the condition of the
portrait of the Earl of Aberdeen is so poor that they may lose
it altogether. |

picture will be lost altogether but I will do the very best I
can with it, but if it should happen not to turn out satisfactory
I must ask you to hold me blameless, as I can but do my very
best, which I will be sure to do. I shall also be obliged to
charge you £4 more for the extra time and trouble above
my first estimate making £8 10 shillings in all, instad
of £4 10 shillings as first mentioned. As soon as the work
is completed I will let you know.
