Letter from Charles Barry to Sir George Scharf, director of the National Portrait Gallery, dated 26 May 1859, offering to sell the portrait of John Selden to the Gallery and giving details of the portrait's provenance.

Sir
I beg to offer to the notice of the Trustees of the National Portrait Gallery, a Portrait of the celebrated John Selden. It was formally in the possession of the Revd. W. Cole, whose autograph account accompanies it. It has been in my possession for about thirty years, and I am willing to part with it for the sum of Forty Pounds. I am Sir your obedient Servant
