Letter from Millais to Sir G. Scharf, director of the National Portrait Gallery, dated 2 September 1894, confirming that he painted both the portrait of Thomas Carlyle and that of Wilkie Collins recently offered to the Gallery.

I remember painting both the Carlyle & Collins. The former was done in 3 sittings & I rather think it a goodish portrait. Wilkie Collins had a great bump on his forehead as depicted - Just received your Report which
