Letter from Robert Walker, a dealer from Bath, to Sir G. Scharf, director of the National Portrait Gallery, dated 10 February 1860, giving reasons why the portrait of Sir William Herschel which he was offering to sell to the gallery was both important and valuable.

I am not unwilling that you should retain the Portrait of Herschel until all the Trustees have seen it. I have great faith in its winning powers & should it be at last rejected I have other resources. one thing is quite certain.. The Trustees will never be able to obtain another portrait of like interest, as from a communication I have received from Sir John Herschel, he informs me that he know of no replica & that he possesses a Crayon Head by Russel & also a late head done in oil as well as
