Letter from Harriet Mill to Sir George Scharf, the director of the National Portrait Gallery, dated
22 September 1886, discussing the portrait of her brother at length.
Letter

4 Longton Grove, Sydenham, S.E.
Sep 22nd 1886

Dear Sir,

My friend Lady Cole has forwarded to me your letter of yesterday to her, concerning the Photographic Portrait of my late brother John Stuart Mill. This was worked on by a good Artist, and was bought by me from Watkins, who was very much disappointed that my brother would not allow other copies to be taken
