What Should Museums Display?

Admission Free

In creating the exhibition 'Between Worlds: Voyagers to Britain 1700-1850', the National Portrait Gallery needed to consider whether it is the duty of cultural institutions to present distressing or offensive images from the past as historical evidence or whether, by so doing, it is perpetuating the abuse of previous centuries. This free public discussion to explore this important subject is chaired by NPG Director Sandy Nairne with an invited panel including Oku Ekpenyon, Ratan Vashwani (Museums Association), John McAleer (Curator of Imperial and 18th-Century History, National Maritime Museum) and Claude Ardouin (Head of the Africa Section of the Ethnography Department of the British Museum).
