the Collection: Walter Benington
This display celebrates the portrait
photographs of the pictorialist photographer Walter Benington
(1872-1936) and shows for the first time a selection of newly
acquired works focusing on his 'at home' images of leading artistic,
literary, political and scientific figures.
Benington's subjects include
innovative dance teacher Margaret Morris, the artists Alfred
Wolmark and Philip de László, the author of A
History of Europe (1935) H.A.L. Fisher, television pioneer
John Logie Baird, women writers George Egerton and Storm Jameson
as well as Albert Einstein photographed in 1921 whilst visiting
London to present his theories of Relativity.
The National Portrait Gallery
would like to thank Rob Crow, who has generously shared his comprehensive
research on Walter Benington's photographic oeuvre and helped
curate this display.
