When Queen Victoria met the 'Jersey Lily'

Jacqui Ansell, costume historian, examines the rules of conduct when being presented at the court of Queen Victoria.

Bringing to light: lost, hidden and suppressed

Picture researcher Joanne King describes the process and the difficulties of locating the forgotten photographs that now feature in the exhibition.

'Ourselves as others see us': late 19th century animated portrait photography
Free
Stephen Herbert, author of a recently published book on Muybridge, tells the story of photographic portraits taken as moving images.

Tyranny of the Eye; Hitler, his photographers and the cult of the Führer

Robin Muir, curator of the exhibition, discusses how Hitler shunned photographers on his rise to power but later used printed images as powerful propaganda.

Celebrities, Saints and Sinner - The Photograph as Holy Relic?
Why do we photograph the same people over and over again? Richard Howells, University of Leeds, argues that the photograph continues he tradition of the medieval relic.

Photographer Terry O'Neill, renowned for his iconic images of film and pop stars, discusses the issues involved in photographing celebrities.

Figurative Fantasies: Re-Presenting
Black Portraits and Identities
in the 20th and 21st Centuries
This event explores the intersection of visual imagery with ideas around race, politics, sexuality, and cultural identity that are associated with celebrated black icons such as, Josephine Baker, Donna Luna, Muhammad Ali, and Chris Ofili. It examines how images have been constructed and discusses their relation to the dominant cultural and aesthetic stereotypes of their time. Speakers include Lola Young, Richard Powell, Sarah Lewis and David A Bailey

Photography and Celebrity
One-day symposium exploring the fascinating landscape of the celebrity image and the various forces that shape the production and consumption of celebrity in contemporary British culture. The day will feature presentations by critics, media professionals, artists and photographers including Doubletake artist Alison Jackson, Harry Borden, Richard Hearnu, and Stephen Bull.
