Call for entries
The Call for Entries for the Taylor Wessing Photographic Portrait Prize 2008 is now closed.

The exhibition of selected works will be shown at the Gallery from 6 November 2008 - 15 February 2009.

Rules for entrants

1 | Photographers

  • must have been 18 years of age or over on 1 January 2007
  • can submit up to six photographs
  • previous winners of the Prize, since and including 2003, are not eligible to enter the competition
  • must write their name, address, daytime telephone, email address and title of work (indicating if it is part of a series if relevant) on the back of each photograph
  • must pay a registration fee of £16 for each photograph entered
  • must ensure that their completed entry form, fee and photograph(s) are received at London College of Communication no later than 17.00 on Friday 25 July 2008
  • warrant to the National Portrait Gallery that they own the work submitted, that the whole copyright in the work is vested in them or, if the copyright belongs to a third party such as an agency, that the photographer has the right to submit the work free from encumbrances or restrictions and that if the work was commissioned for private and domestic purposes it is submitted with the permission of the person who commissioned it
  • warrant that, if their work is selected for exhibition, they have obtained the appropriate model releases from persons featured in their submitted photographs for all sales, marketing, educational and publicity uses and that no additional releases are required in respect of names, trademarks, designs or works of art depicted in the work
  • agents submitting work on behalf of photographers for the purpose of the competition must warrant that they have agreed this with the photographer prior to entry
  • agree that their work may be exhibited at the National Portrait Gallery, London, and subsequently at any other exhibition tour venue organised by the Gallery
  • agree that the Gallery may reproduce and or license the reproduction of any entries featured in the Taylor Wessing Photographic Portrait Prize exhibition without any payment to the photographer, model or any third party for any sales, marketing, educational and publicity use on, and in, all media worldwide including catalogues, posters, postcards, the Internet and within a television documentary related to the exhibition. However, such free use shall only be in connection with the Taylor Wessing Photographic Portrait Prize and where practicable the photographer, and if appropriate the agency, will receive credit for such use
2 | Photographs
  • must be portraits. 'Portrait' may be interpreted in its widest sense, of 'photography concerned with portraying people with emphasis on their identity as individuals'
  • must have been taken after 1 January 2007. Photographers must, if required, show proof of the date on which the photograph was taken
  • can be black and white or colour
  • must be unmounted and on paper no smaller than 420 x 297mm (A3 size) and no larger than 1015 x 760mm. The image may be smaller than the paper size
  • must be submitted in transparent protective sleeves in order to protect during judging
3 | The decision of the judges is final and no discussion or correspondence can be entered into. The judges reserve the right to vary the awards or not to make any award.

4 | Photographers will be notified of the judges' decision by email or by post by Friday 29 August 2008 and must arrange collection of their work between 1 and 5 September 2008. It is the photographer's responsibility to contact the National Portrait Gallery if s/he has not received notification by that date.

5 | The responsibility for damage or loss, however caused, is the responsibility of the photographer. Photographers are therefore advised to arrange adequate insurance cover against such risks. The sponsor, the touring venues or the National Portrait Gallery shall not be liable for any loss or damage, whether or not caused by their negligence.

6 | Employees of the National Portrait Gallery and sponsors are not eligible to enter the Prize.

7 | Delivery
  • all photographs, whether delivered in person or by post/courier, must be received by Friday 25 July 2008. Proof of posting will not be accepted as proof of receipt
  • entrants who deliver their photograph(s) in person will be given receipt of entry
  • entrants who send in their photographs by post/courier will be notified of their arrival by email by Thursday 7 August 2008
  • entrants whose payments cannot be cashed will be disqualified
  • all debit/credit card details must be completed and the expiry date must be at least two months after the date of entry
  • all costs incurred by postal/courier services (including customs charges and any import duties) must be paid for in advance by the photographer. The National Portrait Gallery will refuse to take delivery of any work that may incur charges to the Gallery
Delivery Dates
Monday 21 - Friday 25 July 2008 (09.00-17.00 hrs only), at London College of Communication. Delivery at any other time will not be accepted.

8 | Collection/return of unexhibited photographs
  • photographs delivered in person must be collected from London College of Communication between 1 and 5 September 2008
  • Photographs sent from within the UK will be returned to a UK address provided the photographer has included sufficient return postage in UK stamps
  • photographs sent from overseas will be returned by post provided the photographer has included correct postage in international postage coupons
  • photographs delivered by courier will be returned provided the photographer arranges and pays a courier company to collect between 1 and 5 September 2008
Please note that any works remaining at London College of Communication after the collection dates (1-5 September 2008) will be disposed of without prior notice.

9 | Exhibited photographs
Prints exhibited at the National Portrait Gallery and the exhibition tour venues should be collected in person from the location identified by the National Portrait Gallery in correspondence with the exhibitor. Exhibitors will be notified in writing of the dates and times that photographs must be collected from this location after the exhibition tour. Written notification will be sent to the photographer's last known address. It is the photographer's responsibility to inform the Gallery in writing of any change of address. The Gallery will reserve the right to dispose of photographs not collected by the final collection date without any prior notice.
