Born in 1951, Tony Bevan is celebrated for his distinctive approach to portraiture. Unlike other artists, Bevan is not concerned with the faithful recording of appearance or with portraiture as a means of self-expression. Instead, he has developed a form of self-portraiture that uses his appearance as a site from which he can explore his thoughts, focussing on the interpretation his physical and psychological presence.

Including 30 illustrations, this book charts Bevan's self-portraiture, from his characteristic 'half-and-half' paintings of the early 1980s to the his latest series of autoscopic self-portraits based on the highly expressive 'Character Heads' of the eighteenth-century sculptor Franz Xaver Messerschmidt.

Author Paul Moorhouse, Curator of Twentieth-Century Portraits at the National Portrait Gallery, London, explores the development of Bevan's work, discussing the themes behind his unique approach to self-portraiture.
