'Brick Kilns', Clay Buff 1900 Miles Above St. Louis 1832 by George Catlin

During his descent of the Missouri River by canoe, Catlin paused to paint a series of bluffs of fantastic shape and colour. Trappers called them the 'Brick Kilns', but Catlin endowed them with more elevated associations: they resembled the 'structure' of a colossal city' reduced by 'the destroying hand of time' to'an unsystematic and unintelligible mass of sublime ruins'. Their picturesque beauty', he wrote, 'consists in the variety of their vivid tints'.
