Oscar Wilde greetings card

Playwright, wit and representative of the London aesthetic movement. Oscar Wilde arrived in New York on the steamship Arizona in January 1882 with 'nothing to declare but my genius'. Wilde called upon a photographer Napoleon Sarony at his studio in Union Square to commission publicity photographs for his American lecture tour.

Sarony's entrepreneurial flair, flamboyant personality and skill made him one of the most highly patronised photographers of his day. He found in Wilde 'A picturesque subject indeed' and the sitting resulted in twenty-seven approved shots. In December 1883, this portrait became the focus of a landmark American Supreme Court case in which Sarony, given his particular choice of costume and backdrop (among other creative decisions), was granted exclusive rights as author over the portrait's use, and secured the extension of copyright laws to include photography in future.
