This double portrait by the distinguished German photographer Thomas Struth was taken on 7 April 2011 in the Green Drawing Room at Windsor Castle. The photograph was commissioned by the National Portrait Gallery to mark the Queen's forthcoming Diamond Jubilee in the year of the Duke of Edinburgh's ninetieth birthday. Born in 1954, Struth studied at Dusseldorf Academy, where his teachers included the painter Gerhard Richter and the photographers Bernd and Hilla Becher.
