In 2012 the Travel Award was won by Carl Randall for his proposal to travel along the Tokaido Highway between Tokyo to Kyoto in the footsteps of Japanese woodblock print artist Ando Hiroshige (1797-1858). On route he recorded the people, their livelihoods and the landscape as he finds them today in contrast to what was portrayed by Hiroshige.
Carl (b. 1975, UK) is the winner of the 2012 BP Travel Award and exhibited in the 2002, 2012 and 2013 BP Portrait Awards. He is a graduate of The Slade of Fine Art, The Princes Drawing School and Tokyo University of Fine Arts. He has won several other prizes including 1st prize in the Sunday Times Watercolour Competition; 2nd prize twice in The William Coldstream Painting Competition at The Slade; and The 2011 Nomura Art Prize, Tokyo, Japan. Scholarships include The Daiwa Anglo Japanese Foundation and MEXT Scholarships to study in Japan.
He has exhibited and sold with various galleries in the UK and internationally The Royal Academy of Arts, The Jerwood Gallery, The Mall Galleries; Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Arts, Tokyo Art Award; Art Volta, Basel, Switzerland; and Art Taipei, Taiwan. Artist in Residencies include Hiroshima Art Document, Hiroshima City (to meet and paint portraits of survivors of the atomic bomb); and ING Fresh Eyes on Formula 1, Fuji Speedway (to document the Formula 1 races in Japan).
