In 2013 the Award was won by Sophie Ploeg for her proposal to explore how lace is represented in 17th century art and in modern applications.
Sophie Ploeg (b. 1974, The Netherlands) is a Dutch artist, living and working in the UK. She has studied and finds inspiration in art history (MA, Ph.D) which comes through in her work. She has a particular interest in painting textures in portraits and drapery.
Recently she has focussed her efforts in painting the fine detail of antique lace. This interest has developed further in her project The Lace Trail which she undertook after winning the BP Travel Award 2013. During the year she visited famous lace-making centers such as Bruges in Belgium and Honiton in Devon, met modern lace makers and artists, and studied 17th century lace and art collections. For this project she researched lace and fabrics in early 17th century portraiture and created new paintings inspired by her findings. She has exhibited her works with the Royal Society of Portrait Painters, The Pastel Society, The Royal Institute of Oil Painters among others and exhibits regularly in the US
