National Portrait Gallery - Wellington Funeral Scroll
The Duke of Wellington’s funeral in November 1852 was one of the most spectacular ever seen in England. The procession to St Paul’s Cathedral was watched by a crowd estimated at a million and a half people. A printed panorama, over sixty-six feet long, was published to commemorate the event.
Explore this panorama in all its stunning glory with our new iPad app. Pan right across the procession and zoom into all the fascinating details captured including thousands of uniformed soldiers from every regiment in the British army; state and regimental bands; horse-drawn carriages for members of the Royalty; aristocracy; politicians; the Lord Mayor; 83 Chelsea Pensioners (matching the Duke’s age); and the Duke of Wellington’s family, culminating in the double height section of the funeral cortège itself and poignantly the late Duke's horse carrying his master's boots.
