How are you inspired by Bailey’s Stardust? Share your photographs with us through Instagram and you could see your work displayed at the National Portrait Gallery.

How to enter

Follow @nationalportraitgallery on Instagram. If you do not already have an Instagram account, you will need to download the app to your smartphone or tablet and register for free.

Take your photo portrait using Instagram. Filters and other effects may be applied, but are not essential.

Caption the photograph with a title, your full name and the tag #InspiredByBailey, and upload to Instagram.

Please note: if your Instagram account is private, we will not be able access your entry.

The deadline for submissions is Sunday 4 May 2014.


Entries will be judged by photographer Mark Pattenden, who works alongside David Bailey, and Sandy Nairne, Director of the National Portrait Gallery. Three winners will be selected and notified through Instagram by 19 May.


Three winning entries will be displayed at the National Portrait Gallery, London, from 26 May to 1 June 2014, as well as on the Evening Standard and Gallery websites.

Winners will also receive a copy of the Bailey’s Stardust book (RRP £45) and £250 to spend at Hugo Boss UK stores.

Terms and conditions

All entries must be taken using the free smartphone application Instagram and must be the photographer’s original work.
The competition is limited to one entry per person.
Images must be produced in response to the work of David Bailey and must be identifiable as portraits.
By submitting your work, you confirm that your contribution is your own original work, is not defamatory and does not infringe any UK laws and that you have the consent of anyone who is identifiable in your contribution or the consent of their parent / guardian if they are under sixteen.
By entering the competition, you confirm that the National Portrait Gallery, Evening Standard and exhibition sponsor Hugo Boss may reproduce images for the purposes of marketing and promotion, including use on the Gallery website and social media sites.
All entries must be submitted by 23.59 on Sunday 4 May 2014. Entries received after this time will not be eligible for consideration.
The judges will select three winning photos. Winners will be notified through Instagram and asked to provide an original, high-resolution copy of the image (as saved to your mobile device) by 20 May 2014. Only high-resolution images will be eligible for display at the Gallery.
No cash alternative.
The Gallery reserves the right to substitute the prize with one of similar value at its own discretion. The Gallery also reserves the right to withdraw or amend the competition as necessary due to circumstances outside its control.
Employees of the National Portrait Gallery their families, agents or anyone else connected with the competition are not permitted to enter.

HUGO BOSS Terms and Conditions

After being loaded with a credit of maximum 250 GBP, the gift voucher / certificate card may be used once, instead of cash, to pay for a purchase made at any of the stores operated by HUGO BOSS UK 39 Plender Street London NW1 0DT and located within the United Kingdom.
The gift voucher / certificate card is not a cheque guarantee, credit or charge card and cannot be exchanged for cash.
The amount of credit saved on the gift voucher / certificate card when the purchase is made will be decisive and no interest will be paid on the credit amount. If the full amount of the gift voucher / certificate is not used when a purchase is made, a new gift voucher / certificate card will be issued for the remaining amount, or the remaining amount may be paid out in cash in such a case.
If the gift voucher / certificate is used for a purchase where the total value of the purchase exceeds the credit on the gift voucher / certificate, the winner is responsible for payment of any remaining amount of the purchase.
This gift voucher / certificate card remains valid for 1 year from the date of issue. At the end of that period any unused balance on the gift voucher / certificate card will be forfeited.
HUGO BOSS reserves the right to refuse to accept the gift voucher / certificate card in payment in individual cases should a technical malfunction hinder its use for payment. Any such refusal by HUGO BOSS is temporary only and will not prevent the customer from using the gift voucher / certificate card on another occasion.
HUGO BOSS will not be liable in the event that the gift voucher / certificate card is lost, stolen or damaged. HUGO BOSS will also not be liable if the voucher / card is misused.
HUGO BOSS reserves the right to refuse to accept a gift voucher / certificate card where it reasonably suspects that the purchase or redemption of the card is connected with unlawful activities and HUGO BOSS will be entitled to block the voucher / card. In such case the holder of the blocked gift voucher / certificate card is not entitled to have it re-enabled or to have the relevant credit amount paid out in cash. Gift voucher / certificate cards may not be resold.

Each winner is solely responsible for reporting and payment of all applicable taxes and of any other applicable charges on the prize, e.g. customs.
HUGO BOSS will not be liable for any loss that occurs if, through no fault of its own, e-mails, letters or prizes are lost in the mail and/or are not received by the winner provided that neither HUGO BOSS nor its vicarious agents have acted in a manner that was intentionally wrongful or negligent.
Prizes are not transferable, or exchangeable or redeemable for cash.
